Royal Oman Police and Bank Muscat launch anti-fraud campaign

MUSCAT, 26 September 2019 

The Royal Oman Police and Bank Muscat have come together to launch an anti-fraud awareness campaign. The campaign will educate the general public so that they do not fall prey to various cyber frauds that are being perpetrated by fraudsters from all across the globe. The special educational campaign will be carried out using various means including print media, radio, television and social media channels.

Speaking about the campaign, Lt. Col. Abdulrahman bin Amer Al-Kiyoumi, Director of the Department of Combating Economic Crimes, Royal Oman Police, said: “The launch of this campaign is a continuation of the various measures, which are being undertaken by Royal Oman Police in preventing cybercrime and fighting fraud.  We are focusing on increased awareness among all people in the sultanate.”

Lt. Col. Abdulrahman Al-Kiyoumi added that in today’s world of constant technological and digital developments, fraudsters have devised new ways of committing financial crimes. Interception of e-mails (man-in-the-middle attacks), phishing and using bank statements of others are increasingly used by cybercriminals. He added that phishing of corporate email was a major threat faced by businesses while fraud transactions was one of the main problems faced by individuals.

Speaking about the campaign, Sheikha Yousuf Al Farsi, Chief Strategy & Corporate Services Officer, Bank Muscat, said: “Bank Muscat appreciates the various efforts being undertaken by Royal Oman Police in fighting cyber fraud. We thank the Royal Oman Police for this strategic partnership with the bank in fighting cybercrime and hope that this will allow us to increase awareness amongst the general public as well as our customers so as to stop the scourge of cybercrime and fraud.”

The awareness campaign by the Bank will provide the general public with information that will enable them to easily recognize fraudulent practices. It will also educate people to always verify who it is they are dealing with before doing a transaction as well follow digital safety best practices.
