Bank Muscat Green Sports sets benchmark for CSR programmes in Oman

MUSCAT, 19 September 2016 – The Green Sports initiative launched by Bank Muscat to promote Oman as a sporting nation has set a benchmark for corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes in terms of its scope, reach and appeal. Within five years of the launch of the unique programme aimed at greening of football fields across Oman, the bank has to date extended support to 63 sports teams and continues to help eligible teams to realise their sporting dreams.

In step with its 'Let's Do More' vision, Bank Muscat announced 15 new beneficiaries for the Green Sports programme in 2016. The support to develop modern sports infrastructure across the Sultanate complements the government efforts in building a sporting nation. The initiative benefiting communities, especially youth, is aimed at contributing to sustainable development and all-round progress in Oman.

Modern sporting infrastructure developed across the Sultanate as part of the Green Sports initiative is a boon for the game of football. To date, 23 green football fields have been inaugurated while the greening and infrastructure development work is in progress in the remaining fields. Among the 63 beneficiary sports teams, 50 have opted for greening of the football fields with natural turf, 7 for synthetic greening, 5 for floodlights and one for desalination equipment to facilitate greening of the field in an area facing problems of water salinity.

In a unique contribution, the Green Sports initiative has created an ideal platform for social engagement among youth. The football fields developed as part of the Green Sports initiative are serving as a meeting place for children and youth to be engaged in social activities leading to development of strong community bonding and positive character traits. The fields are used to host various activities such as Ramadhan nights, group weddings and other community celebrations.

The criteria for availing the Green Sports support include that sports teams should have been in existence for three years with a minimum of 300 members from the local community. The bank recognises that local teams wield immense influence on neighbourhood communities, especially youth, hence teams with modern infrastructure facilities can help raise sporting heroes for the country.

The CSR and sustainability strategy pursued by Bank Muscat is focused on delivering long-term benefits to the community and the nation. True to its commitment to supporting varied sporting activities in the country, Bank Muscat remains at the forefront in offering the required encouragement to youth. As the nation's leading financial institution, Bank Muscat aims to motivate corporates to provide the required support for youth to excel in all arenas.

The scope of Green Sports support for sports teams include greening of football fields with natural or synthetic turf, floodlights or water desalination equipment in areas facing problems of water salinity. Providing wider representation, the Green Sports support has extended support to develop sustainable sports infrastructure in all parts of the Sultanate.

The consistent progress of the Green Sports initiative confirms the bank's commitment to the programme aimed at providing ample opportunities for young Omanis to develop their sporting talents in an ideal environment. The programme is expected to go a long way in developing the sporting skills and talents of Omani youth, thereby promoting the game of football in Oman.
