​ Shell Oman ties up with Bank Muscat to become one of the first partners to accept contactless card payments

​MUSCAT, 14 JULY 2019 

Shell Oman Marketing Company has tied up with Bank Muscat, the flagship financial services provider in the Sultanate, to become one of the first partners in the Sultanate to accept contactless card payments. Shell Service Stations have implemented Bank Muscat’s secure and robust, contactless ‘Just Tap’ point of sale (PoS) systems for ease of payment and security. This means that payments can be made using contactless cards issued by any bank in Oman.

Speaking about the new tie-up, Amjad Iqbal Al Lawati, AGM - Cards & eBanking, Bank Muscat, said: “Bank Muscat has traditionally had a very strong relationship with Shell Oman Marketing Company and their decision to enable contactless card payments at Shell Service Stations using Bank Muscat’s contactless ‘Just Tap’ PoS system builds further on an already strong relationship. We look forward to working with them to promote digital payment channels in line with the Government’s vision of facilitating e-payments for greater security, convenience and ease of use.”

Commenting on the strategic partnership, Khalid Al Awaisi, Retail Country Manager at Shell Oman Marketing Company mentioned: “Our partnership with Bank Muscat is another historic milestone for Shell Oman Marketing, allowing our customers their first full-scale contactless experience. Contactless digital payment is a step to move forward towards cashless transactions; as a way to provide a more secure and convenient payment option for our customers. We have started this step with Shell Azaiba Service Station, with plans to enable it across all Shell Service Stations in the Sultanate. Through our strategic tie-up with Bank Muscat, we aim to make the experience of each and every customer driving into a Shell Service Station, even more convenient.”

Bank Muscat is also currently running a special promotion for all its debit card and prepaid cardholders to make payments using their cards at Shell Service Stations as part of its ‘Pay and Win’ campaign till July 31st, 2019. All Bank Muscat debit and prepaid card holders, including holders of the newly launched ‘Just Tap’ contactless cards, are eligible to participate in this campaign, which is in line with the Government’s vision of facilitating e-payments for greater security, convenience and ease of use.

The Bank has invited all its customers to pay for their fuel at Shell Service Stations in order to be eligible for the draw. Five hundred lucky winners who use their Bank Muscat debit or prepaid cards at Shell Service Stations in July will be able to win cashback equivalent to the payment made for that particular transaction, which is chosen in the lucky draw.

Providing the ‘best in class’ service, Bank Muscat continues to invest in cutting-edge IT infrastructure, latest PoS terminals and competent human resources available in the payments industry. It is this ‘dedication’ and ‘commitment to service’ that has made Bank Muscat the preferred electronic payment service provider to the nation.

One of the unique aspects of the facility is the use of ATEX certified wireless card terminals at Shell Service Stations in Oman. The ATEX terminals incorporate EU directives on equipment usage in inflammable and explosive environment. ATEX wireless card terminals are certified for safe usage in fuel stations.

The bank’s ability and flexibility to adapt, innovate and provide customised payment solutions is unique, changing the customer payment behaviour from ‘cash to digital’. Bank Muscat commenced card acquiring operations in 2002 and since then has crossed many milestones to become the largest acquirer and issuer of cards in Oman.
