Bank Muscat hands over two more Green Sports football fields in Liwa and Al Hamra

MUSCAT, 30 April 2019

Bank Muscat, the flagship financial services provider in the Sultanate, in step with its vision ‘To serve you better, everyday’ and commitment to partnership in supporting youth and promoting Oman as a sporting nation, celebrated the inauguration of two football fields developed as part of its Green Sports initiative.  Bank Muscat has by now contributed 61 fields as part of its strategic initiative to do more for the country’s youth and help local teams and communities play an important role in the emergence of sports heroes in the country.

A Green Sports football field was presented to the Al Shaab Team in the wilayat of Liwa in North Batinah governorate while another was presented to the Al Taawan Team in the wilayat of Al Hamra in Dakhiliyah governorate.

The first Green Sports field was handed over to the Al Shaab Team in Liwa at an event that was held under the auspices of Honorable Sheikh Ahmed Khalfan Al Ghufaili, State Council Member. It was attended by many dignitaries as well as senior bank officials.

Abdulrahman Al Shizawi, Regional Manager, Batinah North, said: “Bank Muscat’s Green Sports initiative benefits communities, especially the youth, and is aimed at contributing to sustainable development and all-round progress in Oman. The Bank is happy to contribute in a big way to creating sporting heroes in the future as well as overall development of communities across the Sultanate.”

Said Al Mamari, the Team Manager of the Al Shaab Team, thanked the Bank for its CSR strategy and said that the Green Sports initiative has greatly boosted the development of sports, particularly the game of football in Oman.

H.E. Sheikh Salim Saeed Al Wahaibi, President of Oman Football Association, was the guest of honour at the other handover ceremony in Al Hamra, which was attended by many dignitaries and senior bank officials. Khalfan al Rashdi, Assistant Regional Manager, North Dakhliyah, Bank Muscat, reiterated the Bank’s efforts to support the development of modern sports infrastructure across the Sultanate. The initiative benefits communities, especially Omani youth and will also contribute majorly to sustainable development and all-round progress in Oman, complementing the Government’s efforts in the making of a modern and developed nation.

Al Hassan Salim Al Subhi, Team Manager of Al Tawaan Team, thanked Bank Muscat for the football field and its Green Sports initiative to promote a sporting culture among Omani youth.  He expressed his happiness that the team and the community could prosper together thanks to this new infrastructure development that has been spearheaded by the bank. A short film about the team’s achievements was screened and poems read on the happy occasion.

The Green Sports initiative launched by Bank Muscat in 2012 has gained further momentum with a total of 61 fields having been handed over to teams across the Sultanate. The scope of Green Sports support for sports teams include greening of football fields with natural or synthetic turf, floodlights or water desalination equipment in areas facing problems of water salinity.

Sports teams that are at least three years old and with a minimum of 300 members from the local community are eligible for Green Sports support from Bank Muscat. The Bank recognises that local teams wield immense influence on local communities, especially among the youth. Hence teams with modern infrastructure facilities can help raise sporting heroes for the country and also help young people contribute to the nation’s growth and progress.

The Green Sports initiative has created an ideal platform for social engagement among youth. The football fields developed as part of the Green Sports initiative serve as a meeting place for children and youth who are engaged in social activities. This leads to the development of strong community bonding and positive character traits across local communities. The fields are also used to host various other community activities such as Ramadhan nights, group weddings and other community celebrations.

Bank Muscat is proud to have led the way in contributing to sustainable development in Oman with various initiatives. As the nation’s leading financial institution, Bank Muscat aims to provide the motivation for youth to excel in all arenas and thereby contribute to the overall development and progress of Oman.
