bank muscat inaugurates 1st Green Sports playing field in Ibri

MUSCAT, 30 March 2013 – The Green Sports initiative launched by Bank Muscat to develop a sporting nation marked a milestone as the first green playground developed by Al Reef Team in the wilayat of Ibri as part of the bank’s unique CSR initiative was inaugurated under the auspices of His Highness Sayyid Fahar bin Fatik Al Said, in the presence of a large turnout of dignitaries, prominent citizens and senior bank officials led by Waleed Al Hashar, Group General Manager – Corporate Services.

 

H.H Sayyid Fahar bin Fatik Al Said congratulated Bank Muscat for the unique accomplishment aimed at motivating and supporting the youth in building a sporting nation. H.H Sayyid Fahar said: “The Green Sports initiative by Bank Muscat is highly commendable as it helps lay the foundation at the grass-root level for sports infrastructure across Oman. The initiative complements the government efforts in building a sporting nation by providing the youth the required infrastructure facilities. The initiative also contributes to sustainable development and protection of the environment, thereby ensuring all-round development in Oman.” 

 

H.H Sayyid Fahar added: “The Green Sports initiative will help identify and develop sporting talents and strengthen sports infrastructure in general and football in particular. Sports and games are important activity for youth to show their talents and the Green Sports initiative provides a real chance to develop their talents. The bank muscat initiative is a fine example for the private sector to support the government in strengthening the country’s sports infrastructure.”

 

The Green Sports initiative was launched by the bank in 2012 in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports Affairs to promote Oman as a sporting nation and lay the foundation at the grass-root level for a sustainable sports infrastructure. As part of the

5-year programme, 10 sports clubs were given support to green their playing fields in 2012.

 

The bank recognises that local clubs wield immense influence on neighbourhood communities, especially youth, hence clubs with modern infrastructure facilities can help raise sporting heroes for the country. The initiative reiterates the bank’s support to Oman’s youth who represent the future of Oman, besides contributing to sustainable development and protection of the environment, thereby ensuring all-round development in Oman.

 

Waleed Al Hashar said: “Bank Muscat is proud to see the spectacular results of the Green Sports initiative and inaugurate the first green playing field in Ibri. We thank H.H Sayyid Fahar bin Fatik Al Said for gracing the occasion as the guest of honour. We also congratulate Al Reef Team for seizing the opportunity to green their playing field, thereby setting a fine example for other clubs and teams in Oman.”  

 

Waleed Al Hashar added: “The Green Sports initiative launched by the bank as part of its CSR strategy is aimed at further strengthening its leadership role in social responsibility and facilitate partnership between the government and the private sector for sustainable development and progress of Oman, inspired by the directive of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said to activate the role of the private sector in social responsibility and development of Omani society.”

 

The initiative is in line with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), which has included Green Sports in its current 10-year program: Resolution 2997 XXVII. Sporting activities involving environmental commitment are now playing an increasingly important role at the global level in focusing recognition on protecting our planet.

 

The 5-year Green Sports initiative allows Bank Muscat to closely align itself with the global UNEP programme. The bank will primarily develop green playing fields across Oman and launch community projects targeting the youth, who represents 70 per cent of the Sultanate’s population. Many CSR projects by Bank Muscat will be clustered around sports, an essential activity for everyone’s well-being. These sports activities will take place in green fields developed by the bank.

 

H.E Humaid Ali al Nasiri, Majlis Ash’shura member from the wilayat of Ibri appreciated Bank Muscat, stressing that this initiative will contribute to the creation of an environment encouraging Omani sports talents. “The initiative is a big support for the country’s youth and will contribute to establishing proper sports infrastructure in the country. We are confident that many youngsters will benefit from this initiative and become sporting heroes for the country.”

Said bin Mohammed al Nasiri, President of Al Reef Team, thanked Bank Muscat for the Green Sports initiative which will contribute significantly to establishing sports infrastructure.  “The private sector should follow the example of Bank Muscat in supporting sports activities in Oman. Such initiative will equip sporting heroes in the country. We are delighted that Al Reef Team has become a role model for other clubs and teams to benefit from the Green Sports initiative.”

 

Sulaiman bin Hamdan al Hatmi, Deputy President of Al Reef Team, appreciated the significant role played by Bank Muscat in supporting various sports activities in the Sultanate, stressing that the Green Sports initiative was a pioneering idea in nurturing young sports talents. He congratulated Al Reef Team for raising the standard of their playing field with Green Sports support.”

 

Abdullah bin Hamad al Kalbani, Captain of Al Reef Team said he was confident that many young athletes and players will benefit from the facility developed with the support of Green Sports initiative. He thanked Bank Muscat for the initiative and creating a favourable environment for them to excel in sports and games.”

 

Said Al Zaabi, Regional Manager – Dhahirah Governorate, thanked the dignitaries for attending the ceremony and congratulated Al Reef Tem for commendable efforts in contributing to sporting activities in Oman. “The bank will support all deserving clubs across the Sultanate to green their playing fields. To achieve the goals of the initiative, the project will continue for a period of five years and the bank will provide a fair chance to all teams and clubs in the coming years. The initiative is a strategic decision by the bank in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports Affairs to promote Oman as a sporting nation.”

 

The Green Sports initiative has evoked a big response in its second year of operations in 2013. Applications from clubs to green their playing fields are presently being reviewed by a special committee as a total of 10 clubs/teams across the Sultanate will benefit from this programme every year.

 

The funding eligibility criteria include that sports clubs/teams should have been in existence for three years with a minimum membership of 300 youth from the local community. Bank Muscat will lay turf grass and plant trees and hand over the fields to beneficiary clubs/teams.

Bank Muscat is a strong supporter of sporting activities, especially football, and was the first private sector institution to announce support to both the Oman national teams playing in the Asian qualifiers for 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and 2012 Olympics in London.

 

Notable sporting s activities supported by Bank Muscat include Oman Sail’s Women’s Programme, an initiative bringing sailing into the lives of Omani women, aimed at empowering women and encouraging them to develop sailing skills for recreation and profession. The association with the Oman Sail project stems from Bank Muscat’s CSR to channelise the country’s maritime heritage to future generations and help train a batch of women sail instructors. The bank also supported the all-women team of Al Thuraya sail vessel which participated in the Sailing Arabia - The Tour (SATT) competition.

 

Bank Muscat is the first Omani bank to establish a full-fledged CSR department.
