Oman National Golf Championships 2008
Muscat. 1st January 2008. Ghallah Wentworth
Golf Club (GWGC) is once again gearing up to
host the 34th Oman National Golf Championships,
the most prestigious golf tournament in the
Sultanate. The Competition will take place over
the weekend of 3rd and 4th January and players
representing all golf clubs in Oman are expected
to participate.
The 34th Oman National Championships will be
held on Thursday 3rd and Friday 4th January 2008
which is a Gross Stroke Play Competition
generously sponsored by the Oryx Fund of
BankMuscat SAOG, Oman’s leading bank.
Speaking on the occasion, AbdulRazak Ali Issa,
Chief Executive, BankMuscat said:
“Being the popular and most challenging golf
competition in the country, Oryx Fund of
BankMuscat is delighted to sponsor the 34th Oman
National Championship. We look forward to a long
and fruitful relationship with the country’s
golfing fraternity and we wish all the players
at the Championship the very best of luck for an
exciting round of golf.”
Mubarak Al Hassani, Ghallah Wentworth Golf Club,
commented saying:
“The Gallah Wentworth Golf Club is fully
geared to host the competition as the 18 Holes
Course is in good shape and has been spruced up
for this event. It is anticipated that the event
will attract a big field with many leading golf
players in the Sultanate each dreaming of taking
the lead on day one on Thursday with the winner
being crowned on Friday. On behalf of the
Management of Ghallah Wentworth Golf Club, I
thank Oryx Fund of BankMuscat for its support
and would like to invite the public to this
event to enjoy some good golfing and take
advantage of the lovely climate”.
The defending champion Azaan Al Rumhy is in good
form and will be a favourite to win along with
his brother, Hamed. However, they will face
stiff competition from the other top players in
the country, viz, Abdullah Mohammed (Oman’s most
acclaimed golfer who has won this championship 9
times), Puli Sharma (former Muscat Open
champion), Mohammed Suleiman, Sachin Bawa, Ali
Hameed, Ian Morrison, Sumant Sunder, and
newcomer Marius Esterhuizen et al. Becoming the
2008 Champion will be easy and will undoubtedly
require some very special golf.
Whilst the Oman National Championships are
primarily a men’s gross competition, there will
also be net prizes on offer and, once again, a
separate Ladies’ net competition.
Krishnan SRK, Head of Asset Management and
Private Banking Department of BankMuscat will be
on hand on Friday evening to bring the
Championships to a close with the presentation
of prizes, followed by a presentation dinner.
