BankMuscat Launches new ‘Prepaid Card’

Muscat. 11 September 2007: BankMuscat, the nation’s leading bank, has once again lived up to its image of a ‘pioneer’ in the domestic banking industry, with the launch of a new ‘Prepaid Card’. With the launch of this card, BankMuscat has now added a new product to its existing multi-dimensional portfolio of products.

Speaking on the occasion, AbdulRazak Ali Issa, Chief Executive, BankMuscat said:

“Electronic payments are a driver of economic development and an enabler of growth in a country. As the leading issuer and acquirer of cards in Oman, BankMuscat would like to accelerate the development of e-payment network in the country. BankMuscat is paving the way by opening up the electronic banking channels and extending the convenience of payments through cards even to non-customers.”

The prepaid card, which is on the Visa Electron platform, can be used to pay for goods and services at merchant establishments globally, withdraw cash from the ATM machines and make e-payments at all Royal Oman Police (ROP) directorates. Any national or resident of Oman, as well as a tourist visiting the country, irrespective of whether he/she has a bank account, can avail of this facility from any BankMuscat branch.

Commenting on the occasion, Brigadier Baqir bin Mohammed Al-Saleh, Director General of Financial Affairs at the Royal Oman Police (ROP), said:

“Local and International bank cards have been introduced to replace cash transactions and to save considerable time & effort. In view of the system's importance as the most ideal mode for the collection of revenues in future, the Royal Oman Police has, in accordance with the instructions of H.E. Lt. General Malik bin Sulaiman Al- Ma'amari, Inspector General of Police and Customs, started the installation of a number of Point of Sale Terminals at various ROP Directorates in an Endeavour to keep abreast with the latest developments in the field of public revenue collection and to minimize the use of cash”.

Sulaiman Al Harthy, DGM - Consumer Banking, BankMuscat also added,

“In order to promote the usage of these cards, we are launching this product in association with the Royal Oman Police (ROP). We have already installed over 200 Point Of Sale (POS) terminals at various ROP directorates across the country and expect to cover all the ROP directorates by the end of 2007. This product is expected to facilitate the receipt of electronic payments at ROP directorates nationwide, which are expected in time to completely replace all cash dealings.”

In addition to these benefits, the Prepaid Card can also be used to check available balances and request for mini-statements at any ATM displaying the Oman Switch or GCC Switch logos. Cards will initially have to be loaded for a minimum amount of RO 10/- (plus a card handling charge of RO 1/-) and can then be re-loaded across any of the Bank’s branches and Cash Deposit Machines nationwide.
