BankMuscat Launches new ‘Prepaid Card’
Muscat.
11 September 2007: BankMuscat, the nation’s
leading bank, has once again lived up to its
image of a ‘pioneer’ in the domestic banking
industry, with the launch of a new ‘Prepaid
Card’. With the launch of this card, BankMuscat
has now added a new product to its existing
multi-dimensional portfolio of products.

Speaking on
the occasion, AbdulRazak Ali Issa, Chief
Executive, BankMuscat said:
“Electronic payments are a driver of economic
development and an enabler of growth in a
country. As the leading issuer and acquirer of
cards in Oman, BankMuscat would like to
accelerate the development of e-payment network
in the country. BankMuscat is paving the way by
opening up the electronic banking channels and
extending the convenience of payments through
cards even to non-customers.”
The prepaid card, which is on the Visa Electron
platform, can be used to pay for goods and
services at merchant establishments globally,
withdraw cash from the ATM machines and make
e-payments at all Royal Oman Police (ROP)
directorates. Any national or resident of Oman,
as well as a tourist visiting the country,
irrespective of whether he/she has a bank
account, can avail of this facility from any
BankMuscat branch.
Commenting on the occasion, Brigadier Baqir bin
Mohammed Al-Saleh, Director General of Financial
Affairs at the Royal Oman Police (ROP), said:
“Local and International bank cards have been
introduced to replace cash transactions and to
save considerable time & effort. In view of the
system's importance as the most ideal mode for
the collection of revenues in future, the Royal
Oman Police has, in accordance with the
instructions of H.E. Lt. General Malik bin
Sulaiman Al- Ma'amari, Inspector General of
Police and Customs, started the installation of
a number of Point of Sale Terminals at various
ROP Directorates in an Endeavour to keep abreast
with the latest developments in the field of
public revenue collection and to minimize the
use of cash”.
Sulaiman Al Harthy, DGM - Consumer Banking,
BankMuscat also added,
“In order to promote the usage of these
cards, we are launching this product in
association with the Royal Oman Police (ROP). We
have already installed over 200 Point Of Sale
(POS) terminals at various ROP directorates
across the country and expect to cover all the
ROP directorates by the end of 2007. This
product is expected to facilitate the receipt of
electronic payments at ROP directorates
nationwide, which are expected in time to
completely replace all cash dealings.”
In addition to these benefits, the Prepaid Card
can also be used to check available balances and
request for mini-statements at any ATM
displaying the Oman Switch or GCC Switch logos.
Cards will initially have to be loaded for a
minimum amount of RO 10/- (plus a card handling
charge of RO 1/-) and can then be re-loaded
across any of the Bank’s branches and Cash
Deposit Machines nationwide. |
